I started this business three years ago in a surgical waiting room after I was diagnosed with breast cancer. In that room, I saw multitudes of angels of every size and description: figurines, cards, mobiles, prints, books, and more. Grateful post-surgery patients had heaped all of these angels behind, on top of, and around the receptionist’s desk. It was an overwhelming reminder of the help I always have. Along with family and friends, this divine assistance got me through cancer treatment. I decided to design portable reminders of this marvelous help that surrounds us.
I have worked as an artist and designer for over 20 years. I use the traditional mediums of watercolor and oil paints to create spiritual designs and patterns. I create and test all products at my gallery and gift shop at 2080 Hayes St. in San Francisco's Haight-Ashbury district. Living in this revolutionary district - so close to the beauty of Golden Gate Park - is a source of endless inspiration.
My goal for Melinda Gail is to remind women that they are spiritual beings and are surrounded by spiritual help at all times.
I met my husband James - the resident candle-pourer and crystal charm maker - in fashion school in San Francisco. His background in the printing industry compliments my background in art and graphic design. He creates a faithful interpretation of my designs into the textile prints we use for bag production. I write about our adventures in the MG Blog.
A portion of all sales will go to breast cancer charities - BAYS (Bay Area Young Survivors) in San Francisco and Cleaning For a Reason - an organization that provides free house cleaning for cancer patients.
